Why your busy schedule might be killing your ability to experience true fun

3 Elements of True Fun — and How to Have More of It | Catherine Price | TED · 20:23 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: We often mistake distraction for enjoyment, yet many adults feel unfulfilled despite being constantly busy. Science journalist Catherine Price suggests that genuine delight isn't just about being busy; it requires a specific, overlapping confluence of three distinct psychological states to truly make us feel alive.

In her book, The Power of Fun: How to Feel Alive Again, Catherine Price argues that the standard dictionary definition of fun fails to capture the actual lived experience of joy. Through research involving thousands of people, she identified a specific formula for what she calls "true fun." This state occurs only when three elements overlap like the center of a Venn diagram: playfulness, connection, and flow. Price arrived at this conclusion after consulting with thousands of individuals globally. Her findings suggest that true joy is a vital component of a healthy life.

Playfulness does not require being silly or childish; rather, it is a lighthearted attitude toward yourself and the world. Connection involves sharing a special experience with others, while flow requires being active, engaged, and—crucially—completely present. If you are distracted, you cannot achieve flow, and without flow, you cannot experience true fun. This state of flow demands total engagement with the present moment. Without this presence, the experience fails to reach the threshold of genuine delight.

Despite the importance of these moments for mental and physical health, many adults struggle to find them. Packed schedules and intense pressure to succeed often prevent people from unwinding. In fact, the guilt of not being productive can actively strip the joy from an activity. This difficulty has created a market for professional "fun coaches" and party coaches, as people seek ways to reintroduce genuine delight into their lives. The modern obsession with productivity often makes leisure feel like a waste of time. Consequently, many people find themselves feeling unfulfilled despite their constant activity.
