Why avoiding your fears actually makes your confidence shrink
In short: We often think that staying away from difficult tasks keeps us safe. In reality, this avoidance creates a cycle that reinforces your deepest doubts. To build true confidence, you must move beyond simple motivation and begin dismantling the specific internal narratives that hold you back.
Confidence is fundamentally tied to self-esteem, which is the internal opinion we hold about ourselves. While healthy self-esteem allows for a positive outlook and resilience during life's fluctuations, low self-esteem causes individuals to view their lives through a critical, negative lens. This shift often begins in childhood, shaped by messages from parents, teachers, peers, and the media. Interestingly, the brain tends to retain negative messages—such as the idea that you are not good enough—more persistently than positive ones.
The mechanism of low confidence often relies on a self-defeating feedback loop. When faced with a challenge, an individual might avoid it to feel safe in the short term. Yet, such shunning strengthens the counterproductive belief that withdrawal remains the sole method for managing stress. Over time, this behavior validates underlying fears and can lead to significant mental health issues, including anxiety and depression, or even the development of harmful coping mechanisms like substance use.
To break this cycle, the strategy is not just 'trying harder' but active cognitive restructuring. This involves identifying specific negative beliefs—such as 'I am too stupid'—and documenting them. By writing these thoughts down and searching for objective evidence to the contrary, such as specific skills or positive social interactions, you can begin to recalibrate your self-image. The goal is to build a list of at least five positive attributes or external compliments, keeping them visible to consistently challenge the 'not good enough' narrative.
