In short: For 35 years, Professor Costas Grammenos has witnessed the massive evolution of London's maritime cluster. From designing specialized master's degrees to leading academic centers, his influence spans decades of shifting global trade, finance, and shipping dynamics within the heart of the city's commercial engine.

Professor Costas Grammenos has spent 35 years observing the profound transformations within London's maritime industry. Since joining City, University of London as a Visiting Professor in 1982, he has played a pivotal role in bridging the gap between academic research and global commerce. His influence is felt through the specialized curricula he designed, including the MSc Shipping, Trade and Finance, which was founded in 1984. He has also served in senior administrative roles, including a tenure as Pro Vice-Chancellor at City, University of London. Additionally, he held various deputy dean positions throughout his academic career.

The academic footprint of his work is significant. In 1983, he founded the Centre for Shipping, Trade and Finance at what is now Bayes Business School. This institution has since become a global hub, producing over 4,300 graduates from more than 150 countries as of 2020. These alumni often occupy leadership roles across the shipping, energy, and international banking sectors. The institution's academic offerings were further expanded in 1997 with the introduction of the MSc Trade, Transport and Finance. Later, in 2003, he oversaw the launch of the MSc Energy, Trade and Finance.

Beyond the classroom, Grammenos has facilitated high-level international dialogue. He has overseen the organization of major industry gatherings, such as the City of London Biennial Meetings, which began in 1999, and the Athens Triennial Meetings, established in 2004. Since 2008, the Centre has also presented the Onassis Prizes to recognize excellence in shipping, trade, and finance. His career reflects the interconnectedness of academic rigor and the practical demands of the global maritime cluster. These prestigious awards are given to prominent scholars within the fields of international trade and finance. Furthermore, the centre continues to host various global events on an ad hoc basis.
