In short: While the late 90s were dominated by manufactured pop acts, one group of Ohio natives insisted on being viewed as serious musicians. They didn't just want to sell records; they wanted to write, produce, and perform R&B-infused music that stood apart from the 'boy band' label.

Formed independently in Los Angeles by Jeff Timmons, 98 Degrees was a deliberate departure from the industry standard of assembling groups via labels or producers. The founding members—Timmons, Nick Lachey, and Justin Jeffre—were students who transitioned from local performances to professional auditions. They spent years refining their harmonies while working various jobs, including landscaping and delivering take-out food, specifically seeking to emulate the musical depth of acts like Take 6 and Boyz II Men.

The group faced a unique branding challenge during the height of 'teen-oriented' pop. To differentiate themselves from rivals like NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys, Drew Lachey emphasized that they were singers, songwriters, and producers first. They leveraged their Motown signing to establish R&B credibility, moving away from mainstream pop roots to focus on self-written material. This commitment eventually led to a 4x platinum breakthrough with '98 Degrees and Rising' in 1998.

A Grammy nod for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals was awarded to their top-selling track, "Thank God I Found You", a joint project featuring Mariah Carey. Despite the massive success—selling over 15 million records worldwide—the group has maintained a long-term presence through strategic reunions and diverse projects, including holiday albums and high-profile appearances at events like the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

The band's trajectory reflects a cyclical approach to music. After a hiatus starting in 2003, they reunited in 2012 because they felt the pop genre had returned to a favorable stage. They continue to balance legacy performances with new studio work, such as their first album in 13 years, '2.0', released in 2013.
