How a high-powered laser allows cameras to see around corners

In short: To operate safely, autonomous vehicles must detect obstacles that are currently hidden from view. By analyzing single particles of light, researchers are developing a way to reconstruct entire 3D scenes and moving objects that are completely obscured from the naked eye.

Standard vision systems rely on a direct line of sight, but Stanford University researchers are pushing beyond human limitations. By using a laser that is 10,000 times more powerful than versions used a year prior, the team can capture light bouncing off a wide variety of surfaces. This allows the system to detect objects regardless of whether they are shiny like a car or textured like a statue. This capability extends beyond simple detection, as the system can monitor movement in real-time. Such versatility ensures the technology remains practical for various real-world environments.

The process works by aiming a laser at a wall opposite the scene of interest. The laser pulses hit the wall, bounce off hidden objects, and return to the wall before being captured by highly sensitive photon detectors. These sensors are capable of recording even a single particle of light, which is then processed by an efficient algorithm to reconstruct the 3D structure of the hidden scene.

The implications for safety are significant. While some autonomous cars already use similar laser-based systems to detect nearby objects, this new technique could allow vehicles to react to hazards, such as a child's ball rolling into a street, before a human driver even sees them. Beyond transport, the technology could enable aerial vehicles to see through foliage or help rescue teams locate people trapped behind walls or rubble.
