The architect of ethnopluralism: how a French philosopher redefined the far-right
In short: Alain de Benoist moved from defending colonial empires to theorizing a world of bordered cultural regions. By shifting from biological racism to a cultural defense of difference, he created a potent meta-political strategy that continues to shape identitarian movements across the globe today.
Born in 1943, Alain de Beno/Benoist began his career in the early 1960s as a journalist supporting French colonial interests and the OAS. His early writings were overtly ethno-biological; in 1966, he claimed the 'European race' was uniquely capable of evolutionary progress. However, following the political failures of the mid-1960s, de Benoist pivoted from direct political activism to a 'meta-political' strategy, founding the GRECE think tank in 1968 to influence culture rather than elections.
This shift introduced 'ethnopluralism,' a concept centered on the preservation of distinct ethno-cultural regions through mutual respect and borders. While de Benoist moved away from the biological hierarchies of his youth—even stating in 1974 that no race is superior—critics and scholars like Pierre-André Taguieff argue this was a strategic rebranding. They suggest he replaced the discredited language of racial supremacy with a more palatable 'culture of difference' to mask anti-egalitarian beliefs.
The complexity of his thought lies in his contradictions. He has been a critic of both American liberalism and Soviet communism, at one point even justifying a vote for the French Communist Party in 1984. While his work has been cited by the American alt-right, de Benoist has distanced himself from such movements. He views identity as a 'dialogical phenomenon' involving both inherited background and personal choice, yet remains a staunch opponent of the 'ideology of sameness' and the globalized erosion of cultural diversity.
