Is the world ready for a green industrial revolution?

Alok Sharma: Why COP26 is our best chance for a greener future · 8:48 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: The global economy is undergoing a major transformation as climate change transitions from a niche concern to a central priority. As the President-Designate of COP26, Alok Sharma argues that the upcoming Glasgow summit represents a critical moment to turn high-level promises into concrete, large-scale climate action.

The 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference, known as COP26, was scheduled for November 2021 in Glasgow, Scotland. Alok Sharma, who served as the full-time President for the event starting 8 January 2021, has emphasized that the success of our climate future rests in the hands of world leaders. He has specifically called upon G20 leaders to follow the example of climate-vulnerable nations, such as Small Island Developing States (SIDS), which are already leading the way in emission reductions despite facing the most difficult circumstances.

To achieve the necessary level of ambition, Sharma highlighted four essential pillars for the summit. Initially, countries need to adopt climate strategies to cut emissions substantially by 2030 and achieve net zero by 2050. Second, these plans require concrete implementation, including specific agreements on reducing coal use, promoting electric cars, protecting forests, and lowering methane emissions. Third, there is a critical need to honor the $100 billion pledge intended to fund climate action and adaptation in developing states.

Finally, the summit must produce a negotiated outcome that establishes a path for a decade of increasing ambition. This shift is part of what Sharma describes as an accelerating "green industrial revolution." While global processes drive climate change, the solutions often depend on local conditions. Organizations like UNESCO are supporting these efforts by using their global network—including 1,121 World Heritage sites and 729 biosphere reserves—as observatories and pilot areas for targeted adaptation actions.
