Beyond the blade: exploring the comprehensive world of the samurai
In short: Discover the first exhibition of its kind dedicated to the arts of the samurai. This video introduces a collection that moves far beyond weaponry to reveal the daily lives and status of Japan's warrior class.
Curated by Morihiro Ogawa, the exhibition focuses on the intricate craftsmanship of arms and armor, including swords, archery equipment, and firearms. It also examines accessories of rank, such as fans and batons, alongside equestrian gear and banners.
Most items date between the late Heian era's 1156 samurai emergence and the 1868 dissolution of their traditions. Through painted scrolls and screens, the exhibition evokes the world of the daimyo and shoguns, depicting battles, castles, and portraits of warriors. It also highlights recent conservation efforts for pieces within the Metropolitan Museum's permanent collection.
