In short: Arthur de Gobineau, a 19th-century diplomat, transformed personal elitism into a global theory of racial determinism. By arguing that human history was driven by the biological superiority of the Aryan race, he provided a pseudo-scientific framework that would later be exploited by regimes to justify systemic discrimination and mass violence.

Born in 1816 into a royalist family, Arthur de Gobineau grew up harboring deep resentment toward the French Revolution and the democratic shifts of his era. His worldview was rooted in a nostalgic longing for a perceived golden age of chivalry and aristocratic rule. As a Legitimist, he remained fiercely loyal to the House of Bourbon, viewing the rise of the House of Orléans in 1830 as a national catastrophe. This personal political frustration eventually manifested in his seminal work, An Essay on the Inequality of the Human Races, written in the wake of the 1848 revolutions.

Gobineau’s core thesis was that human societies could be divided into exclusive biological entities, with inherited physical traits dictating personality, intellect, and morality. He claimed that aristocrats were inherently superior because they possessed more Aryan genetic traits, having avoided the interbreeding that he believed degraded commoners and other races. While modern scholarship recognizes the notion of biological race as a cultural invention without scientific basis, Gobineau’s ideas gained traction among white supremacists and pro-slavery advocates in the United States, who found his work useful for justifying the exploitation of enslaved people.

The influence of his writings extended far beyond his lifetime, eventually reaching figures like Richard Wagner and the Nazi Party. By the 20th century, his theories were weaponized to support state-sponsored persecution and the systemic dehumanization of those labeled as low-status races. Although most human societies have since moved away from such divisive ideologies, the legacy of Gobineau’s work serves as a stark reminder of how pseudoscientific claims can be manufactured to reinforce structural inequalities and preclude human understanding.
