How to measure the layers of infinity using Beth numbers
In short: In the realm of set theory, not all infinities are created equal. While the aleph numbers count the sequence of infinite sizes, the Beth numbers describe a much more explosive growth, where each new level is the power set of the previous one.
The Beth numbers, denoted by the Hebrew letter beth (<0xE2><0x84><0xB6>), represent a sequence of infinite cardinal numbers that grow through a process of exponentiation. The sequence begins with <0xE2><0x84><0x81>₀, which is the cardinality of the first infinite ordinal, ω. This starting point is identical to <0xE2><0x84><0xB5>₀, the smallest infinite cardinal. To illustrate, the set of all real numbers has cardinality <0xE2><0x84><0x81>₁, whereas <0xE2><0x84><0x81>₂ denotes the power set's cardinality.
This growth is strictly increasing, a fact proven by Cantor's theorem and transfinite induction. Because of this mechanism, the Beth numbers are cofinal in Zermelo-Fraenkel set theory, meaning that any cardinal number, no matter how large, will eventually be surpassed by a Beth number. Interestingly, these numbers possess an idempotent property, where squaring a Beth number does not change its value (<0xE2><0x84><0x81><0xE1><0xB5><0x85>² = <0xE2><0x84><0x81><0xE1><0xB5><0x85>).
The relationship between Beth numbers and the aleph numbers (<0xE2><0x84><0xB5>) is a central mystery in set theory. While it is established that <0xE2><0x84><0x81><0xE1><0xB5><0x85> is at least as large as <0xE2><0x84><0xB5><0xE1><0xB5><0x85>, the exact correspondence between them is undecidable in standard ZFC set theory. However, without this hypothesis, there can be many intermediate cardinalities between the two sequences. The complexity of this relationship remains one of the profound frontiers of mathematical logic.
