How classical Indian dance finds new life within modern art galleries

Bijayini Satpathy in the Galleries: Antaranga (Modern and Contemporary Art) | MetLiveArts · 15:29 · Video: The Met · Watch at the source

In short: Dancer Bijayini Satpathy reimagines the traditional Odissi form through site-specific performances at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. By engaging with the architecture and history of gallery spaces, Satpathy creates a dialogue between ancient dance traditions and contemporary art.

In her performance titled Antaranga—meaning inner or intimate—Satpathy interacts with Sam Gilliam’s drape painting Carousel State. The choreography draws inspiration from the Greek poet Sappho’s Fragment 31, using movement to interpret the complex dimensions of love. This collaboration with composer Bindhumalini Narayanaswamy shifts the soundscape away from traditional Odissi music to suit unconventional environments.

Recorded on May 15, 2022, in Gallery 924, the project honors the legacy of the Mahari temple dancers and Gotipua dancers of Odisha. As the 2021-22 Artist in Residence at The Met, Satpathy’s work bridges the gap between her classical training and the aesthetic demands of modern gallery spaces.
