In short: Far from a simple historical record, the Books of Chronicles were a deliberate editorial project. By selectively curating the past, a single author known as the Chronicler reshaped the identity of a post-exilic people, focusing intensely on the Temple of Jerusalem and the legitimacy of the Davidic dynasty.

Originally part of a larger, unified work that included Ezra and Nehemiah, the Books of Chronicles served as the final entry in the Hebrew Bible. Scholars generally date the Chronicler to between 350 and 300 BC, a period when the community needed to redefine itself following the trauma of the Babylonian Exile. By tracing history from Adam through the reign of King David and Solomon, the author provided a narrative framework that established the continuity of the true Israel.

The Chronicler’s methodology was one of active interpretation rather than neutral reporting. He drew heavily from the earlier books of Samuel and Kings but modified them to suit his theological agenda. For instance, he consistently elevated King David’s status, attributing the preparations for the Temple to him, while omitting the more problematic aspects of Solomon’s reign. By largely ignoring the northern kingdom of Israel, the author signaled a clear bias against the Samaritan community, centering his focus entirely on the southern kingdom of Judah.

This editorial strategy was driven by the need to secure the religious and political identity of the Jerusalem elite. The genealogies, which occupy the first nine chapters of 1 Chronicles, were not merely lists but tools to validate the Davidic line and the central importance of the Temple. By using these records, the Chronicler reinforced the institutions he believed were essential for the survival of the people, crafting a cohesive history that served as a blueprint for the post-exilic restoration of Israel.
