Could a personal AI tutor transform the way we learn forever?
In short: Salman Khan envisions a future where every student has a 24/7 tutor. Rather than simply providing answers, this AI would use Socratic questioning to nudge learners toward deeper understanding, helping them connect disconnected ideas and master complex subjects at their own unique pace.
In his 2024 book, Brave New Words, Khan Academy founder Salman Khan explores how generative AI can revolutionize education. Rather than viewing the technology as a threat, Khan argues that educators should harness its potential to enhance teaching, assessments, and traditional classroom experiences. His vision centers on personalized tutoring that adapts to an individual's specific learning style and pace.
A key component of this vision is Khanmigo, an AI-infused education platform developed by Khan Academy. Unlike standard chatbots that might provide direct answers, Khanmigo is designed to act as a guide. It utilizes a Socratic style of questioning, prompting students to find answers themselves. This approach even allows historical or fictional literary figures to 'come to life,' enabling students to engage in natural, conversational inquiries about their motives or ideas.
The path to developing such a tool was not without significant hurdles. Khan and his team began experimenting with OpenAI’s large language models in the summer of 2022, gaining early access to GPT-4 models before the public launch of ChatGPT in November 2022. This early access allowed the team to address the tendency of these models to provide inaccurate or non-factual responses. By implementing necessary safeguards, they aimed to create a reliable tool that supports, rather than replaces, the learning process.
While Khan presents a captivating vision for AI-driven education, some critics note that his work focuses less on how the broader spectrum of generative AI might disrupt existing educational practices. Nevertheless, the development of tools like Khanmigo represents a significant step in testing how advanced language models can be integrated into a structured learning environment.
