Could AI solve the 'Two Sigma Problem' in modern classrooms?

How AI Could Save (Not Destroy) Education | Sal Khan | TED · 15:37 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: For decades, educators have struggled to replicate the massive gains seen in one-to-one tutoring. Sal Khan argues that artificial intelligence might finally bridge this gap, offering every student a personal tutor and every teacher a dedicated assistant to transform how we learn.

In 1984, researcher Benjamin Bloom identified what became known as the 'Two Sigma Problem.' His study demonstrated that students receiving one-to-one tutoring saw a performance improvement of two standard deviations compared to their peers. While this level of personalized attention is incredibly effective, it has remained largely unattainable for the masses due to prohibitive costs and scalability issues.

Sal Khan, the CEO of Khan Academy, suggests that AI could finally solve this problem by providing personalized instruction on a global scale. Through tools like Khanmigo, AI can act as a comprehensive tutor that doesn't just provide answers, but identifies specific misconceptions in a student's understanding. Rather than writing for the student, the AI is designed to write with them, using Socratic dialogue and debate to help them refine their arguments and build confidence.

The technology also serves as a powerful teaching assistant. For educators, it can assist with lesson planning, explaining complex methods, and generating progress reports. This shift is intended to free teachers from administrative burdens, allowing them to focus more energy on direct, one-on-one interactions with their students. While Khan Academy acknowledges the inherent risks and limitations of AI, the goal is to leverage these tools to spark the most significant positive transformation in educational history.

By moving away from the fear of AI-driven cheating and toward positive use cases, Khan believes we are entering a new era of collaborative learning. This approach aims to make high-quality, individualized instruction an economic reality for students everywhere.
