Restoring the world's last Handley Page Victor tanker bomber
In short: The Imperial War Museums team at Duxford is four years into a massive conservation project to preserve the Handley Page Victor XH648. This video explores the complex, manual-free process of restoring the world's only remaining BK model tanker, revealing the technical challenges of maintaining a Cold War icon.
The Handley Page Victor XH648 is currently housed in Hangar 5, undergoing one of the largest restoration efforts ever attempted by the Duxford conservation team. Because no instruction manual exists for the aircraft, the team must navigate the project without a guide, determining which components can be repaired and which require full replacement.
The aircraft is currently in a state of significant disassembly, with its outer wings, tail plane, and fin removed. Additionally, a large portion of the undercarriage has been detached, and the original paintwork has been almost entirely stripped. Head of Conservation Jon White leads the effort, documenting the discoveries made during this multi-year process.
