In short: In 1947, a radical experiment in religious unity reshaped the landscape of Indian Christianity. By merging four distinct Protestant traditions, the Church of South India broke centuries of denominational and missionary divisions to create a unified body that remains a landmark of global ecumenism.

The Church of South India (CSI) was formally established on September 27, 1947. The organization emerged following lengthy ecumenical talks involving Indian clergy and Protestant missionary groups. This body combined the South India United Church—a 1908 blend of Congregationalist, Dutch Reformed, and Presbyterian bodies—with the South India Methodist province and the Anglican Church of India, Burma, and Ceylon. Drawing from the Gospel of John's plea for unity, the movement adopted the phrase: "That they all may be one." This distinction was a major point of contention. While the Anglican tradition insisted on the "historic episcopate" (an unbroken line of succession from St. Peter), other traditions did not. To resolve this, the union agreed that all existing ministers from the participating churches would be recognized, but all new ordinations would be conferred by episcopally ordained bishops. This compromise allowed for a unified structure while respecting the diverse origins of the member groups.

Historically, this represented the initial post-Reformation merger involving both nonepiscopal and episcopal denominations. A synod manages the CSI, which operates 24 dioceses throughout Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. While no liturgical uniformity was imposed immediately, the church has spent decades developing shared patterns of worship to harmonize the various traditions that joined together in 1947.

The see of Canterbury maintains full communion with the church, which acknowledges the Nicene Creed and the sacraments of Holy Communion and baptism.
