The total electric charge in the universe remains constant, defying all attempts at change.

In short: Electric charge is a fundamental constant of nature. While charges can shift between systems or move within matter, the total amount of charge in a closed system never changes. This principle governs everything from the behavior of subatomic particles to the massive energy releases found in nuclear fusion.

The law of conservation of charge dictates that the net electric charge within any closed system is invariant. While we observe charge redistribution—such as when an object is grounded by connecting it to a larger neutral system like the Earth—the net charge of the system only changes if charge is transferred to or from its surroundings. Within the limits of our most precise observations, this constancy holds true across all chemical and nuclear reactions.

Electric forces, which arise from charges at rest or in motion, are remarkably powerful. They are responsible for the physical and chemical properties of atoms and molecules, exerting forces far stronger than gravity. For instance, if you removed just one electron from every billion molecules in two 70-kilogram people standing two metres apart, the resulting repulsion would exert a force of 30,000 tons. This illustrates the immense energy stored within the distribution of charge.

While electricity and magnetism were once viewed as distinct, 19th-century discoveries revealed their deep interconnection. Michael Faraday found that changing magnetic fields generate electric fields, while James Clerk Maxwell deduced the reverse, showing that these fields travel together as electromagnetic radiation. In 1905, Albert Einstein’s special theory of relativity further unified these into a single phenomenon. By the late 1960s, physicists recognized that the electromagnetic field shares a mathematical structure with the strong and weak nuclear forces, leading to the concept of the electroweak force. Despite this progress, a grand unified theory incorporating gravity remains an elusive goal for modern physics.
