In short: You never feel the electric force pushing against you, but without it, the world would be unrecognizable. It is the primary driver of all chemical and physical properties in matter, operating with a strength that dwarfs gravity by an astronomical margin.

While we often think of electricity and magnetism as distinct forces, they are actually two aspects of a single phenomenon. For a long time, scientists viewed them as separate, but by the 19th century, they began to see them as interrelated. This was solidified in 1905 when Albert Einstein's special theory of relativity proved they are parts of one common phenomenon. However, they still behave differently in practice: electric forces are produced by charges whether they are stationary or moving, while magnetic forces only occur when charges are in motion.

The sheer scale of these forces is difficult to visualize because they are usually balanced out in neutral matter. Because these forces act on individual charged constituents, they are responsible for almost all the physical and chemical properties of atoms and molecules. To put the strength of the electric force into perspective, if you removed just one electron from every billion molecules of two 70-kilogram people standing two meters apart, the resulting repulsion would exert a staggering 30,000-ton force.

The interplay between these fields is the backbone of modern technology. Michael Faraday discovered that a changing magnetic field can produce an electric field, a principle that serves as the foundation for electric power generation. Conversely, moving electric charges create magnetic fields. This reciprocal relationship allows us to generate electricity and create electromagnets, powering the devices we rely on every day.
