Can a simple meditation technique unlock the divine sound hidden within every human being?
In short: Contemporary Sant Mat movements teach that God is not an external deity but an inner reality accessible through a specific yoga practice. By focusing on an internal sound current and light, practitioners aim to awaken the soul, bypass mental chatter, and achieve direct, personal verification of the higher self.
Sant Mat, or the 'teachings of the saints,' emerged as a loosely associated group of teachers in northern India around the 13th century. These movements are defined by an egalitarian rejection of caste hierarchies and religious divisions, emphasizing instead an inward, loving devotion to a divine principle. Today, these traditions are active globally, with the Radha Soami lineage serving as a prominent example of this spiritual path.
At the heart of the practice is Surat Shabd Yoga, often called the 'science of the soul.' Adherents believe that God is unknowable and inconceivable, so he provides a living Master—or Satguru—to act as a bridge. This Master is considered a human manifestation of the divine word, or sound current, which serves as the esoteric essence of the Creator. Initiation by a competent Master is viewed as essential, as they alone can make this inner sound manifest to the disciple.
The practice itself is intentionally 'easy' or Sehaj yoga, requiring no harsh penance. Practitioners sit quietly, eyes closed, focusing their attention at the third eye center while repeating a mantra provided by their Master. Simultaneously, they listen for an internal sound, which is believed to contain everything necessary for spiritual awakening. This process is framed as a practical, rather than theoretical, investigation into the self.
Beyond meditation, followers often adopt an ethical lifestyle centered on five disciplines: nonviolence, truthfulness, chastity, humility, and a strict vegetarian diet. They also practice Seva, or selfless service, which involves dedicating mental, physical, or financial resources to the mission. While many sects exist—including Radha Soami Satsang Beas and various offshoots like Eckankar—they share a common focus on the direct, personal experience of the soul, aiming to transcend the mind's negative imitations to reach the divine.
