How a rejected stage name led David Thewlis to a career of iconic transformations
In short: Born David Wheeler, the actor adopted his mother's maiden name after discovering his birth name was already registered with the actors' union. This simple administrative hurdle marked the beginning of a prolific career, spanning from gritty street philosopher to the Shame Wizard and the villainous Remus Lupin.
Born in Blackpool in 1963, David Thewlis initially pursued music, playing in bands like QED and Door 66 before graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in 1984. His transition to acting was marked by early television roles and a film debut in 1987's Little Dorrit. However, it was his collaboration with director Mike Leigh that defined his early trajectory, culminating in his breakout performance as the embittered street philosopher Johnny in the 1993 film Naked. This role earned him widespread critical acclaim, including a Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival.
Thewlis has demonstrated remarkable versatility, moving seamlessly between high-profile franchises and challenging character studies. He is perhaps best known to global audiences as Professor Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter series, a role he secured without an audition as director Alfonso Cuarón's first choice. Beyond blockbusters like Wonder Woman and Kingdom of Heaven, he has consistently sought out complex television roles, such as the antagonist V. M. Varga in Fargo and the voice of the Shame Wizard in Big Mouth. His performances have garnered nominations for prestigious honors, including an Emmy and a Golden Globe.
Beyond his acting work, Thewlis is an accomplished filmmaker and author. He directed the short film Hello, Hello, Hello in 1995, which earned a BAFTA nomination, and later wrote and directed the feature Cheeky in 2003. His literary pursuits have also been successful, with his black comedy novel The Late Hector Kipling published in 2007, followed by his second book, Shooting Martha, in 2021. Whether portraying historical figures or fantastical villains, Thewlis remains a fixture of modern cinema, balancing his creative output with a private life in Sunningdale alongside his wife, Hermine Poitou.
