How do you redesign a massive museum wing to honor three distinct global cultures?
In short: Architect Kulapat Yantrasast discusses his approach to renovating The Met's Michael C. Rockefeller Wing. He explains how he balanced the need for unique gallery identities with the goal of creating a cohesive space for diverse art traditions.
In 2019, The Met initiated a total overhaul of the Michael C. Rockefeller Wing, nearly five decades after its original construction. The project aims to refresh the presentation of historical works from the ancient Americas, Oceania, and sub-Saharan Africa. Kulapat Yantrasast, the founder of the firm WHY, was selected to lead the design, bringing his focus on cultural inclusivity to the challenge.
Yantrasast’s solution involves creating distinct spatial experiences for each region while ensuring the galleries remain unified. By tailoring the relationship to light and the aesthetic qualities of each space, he seeks to place these traditions into a meaningful conversation with the rest of the museum’s collection. The video includes a conversation between Yantrasast and Alisa LaGamma, the curator in charge of the wing.
