Mapping a third of the earth through its artistic traditions

Curatorial Perspective from Eric Kjellgren, Evelyn A.J. Hall and John A. Friede Associate Curator, Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the Americas · 3:46 · Video: The Met · Watch at the source

In short: The Metropolitan Museum of Art has redesigned its permanent galleries to showcase a vast, diverse expanse of Pacific cultures. This installation offers a deeper look at how art defines identity across one-third of the globe.

The new galleries expand on the Museum's previous display by showcasing a larger portion of its holdings from Polynesia, Melanesia, Micronesia, and Australia. The collection highlights both renowned masterworks and recent acquisitions in sculpture and decorative arts.

A significant addition to this curatorial perspective is the Museum’s first gallery dedicated specifically to the arts of indigenous peoples of Island Southeast Asia. This reflects an effort to represent over a thousand distinct cultures and hundreds of artistic traditions within the Pacific region.
