In short: Before she became a bestselling author, Diana Gabaldon was a professor of behavioral ecology. She began writing her first novel as a private experiment in historical research. After catching a rerun of Doctor Who, she found the spark for her protagonist and a genre-bending series that would eventually span decades.

Diana Gabaldon’s path to literary success was unconventional. Born in 1952, she spent years in academia, earning a PhD in behavioral ecology and serving as a professor of scientific computation at Arizona State University for 12 years. Her early writing career began with a bold query to Gold Key Comics, where she critiqued their recent output and successfully landed a script sample. By the 1980s, she was editing the Science Software Quarterly and writing technical articles, yet she harbored a secret ambition to write a novel for practice.

In 1988, Gabaldon sought a historical setting that would be straightforward to research. Inspiration struck while watching a Doctor Who episode titled The War Games, which featured a 17-year-old Scottish character named Jamie McCrimmon. This provided the foundation for her male lead, James Fraser, and the mid-18th-century Scotland setting. To explain the presence of a modern 20th-century nurse, Claire Randall, within this historical landscape, Gabaldon introduced time travel. She conducted her research entirely through books, as the World Wide Web did not yet exist.

The resulting manuscript, initially titled Cross Stitch, was shared on the CompuServe Literary Forum, leading to representation by agent Perry Knowlton. Her American publishers rebranded the book as Outlander, fearing the original title sounded too much like embroidery. The series has since grown into a massive franchise, including nine main novels, the Lord John spin-off series, and a television adaptation that premiered in 2014. Gabaldon is currently working on the tenth and final installment of the main series, titled A Blessing for a Warrior Going Out.
