Is Eckankar an ancient spiritual lineage or a modern invention by Paul Twitchell?
In short: Founded in 1965, Eckankar promises soul transcendence through the Divine Sound Current. While its leader claims it stems from an ancient lineage of masters, critics argue the movement is a Westernized adaptation of Indian traditions, raising questions about the authenticity of its origins and the true nature of its founder.
Eckankar was established in 1965 by Paul Twitchell, who presented it as a path to 'soul transcendence.' Drawing from the Punjabi Sant Mat tradition, specifically the teachings of Param Sant Ji Maharaj, the movement centers on the 'Sound Current'—a divine force believed to have created the universe. Unlike traditional Sant Mat, which seeks ultimate oneness with God, Eckankar posits that the goal of human existence is to become a 'coworker' with the Divine. Practitioners use spiritual exercises, such as chanting 'HU,' to shift their awareness from the physical body to higher planes of reality, a process Twitchell termed 'Soul Travel.'
The movement's history is marked by significant controversy regarding its legitimacy. In the early 1980s, religious studies scholar David Christopher Lane alleged that Twitchell had fabricated much of the movement's history and his own spiritual authority. Twitchell had claimed to be the 971st master in an ancient lineage, taught by masters who were no longer in their physical bodies. Harold Klemp, who succeeded Darwin Gross as the leader in 1981, eventually acknowledged some validity to these accusations but maintained that the core spiritual truth of Eckankar remained intact regardless of its historical origins.
Structurally, Eckankar is led by the 'Living ECK Master,' a role that has transitioned from Twitchell to Gross, then to Klemp. The organization moved its base of operations several times, eventually settling in Chanhassen, Minnesota, where it constructed a temple complex. By the late 1990s, estimates suggested there were approximately 50,000 members worldwide. Despite the scrutiny surrounding its founding, the movement continues to operate as a nonprofit, offering its followers a structured path toward self-realization and the experience of the Holy Spirit through the guidance of its leadership and the study of its scripture, the Shariyat-Ki-Sugmad.
