How a childhood rivalry with her brother propelled Elina Svitolina to tennis stardom
In short: Elina Svitolina became the first Ukrainian to reach the world top ten, a journey sparked by a simple desire to reclaim her father's attention from her older brother. From her early training in Odesa to becoming a major force in professional tennis, her career is defined by relentless, consistent evolution.
Born in Odesa in 1994, Elina Svitolina was raised by parents with deep athletic roots; her father was a wrestler and her mother a competitive rower. Her entry into tennis was not born of a grand master plan, but of sibling competition. Observing her older brother, Yulian, receive significant attention for his tennis pursuits, a five-year-old Svitolina picked up a racket to capture her father's focus. This early motivation evolved into a professional career that would eventually see her become the highest-ranked Ukrainian woman in history.
Her development accelerated after businessman Yuriy Sapronov noticed her talent at a children's tournament when she was 12. His sponsorship allowed her family to relocate to Kharkiv, where she received the training necessary to excel. By 2010, at age 15, she had already secured a major junior title by winning the French Open girls' event. Her professional ascent was marked by a steady climb through the WTA rankings, breaking into the top 50 in 2013 and the top 10 by May 2017.
Svitolina's career is defined by her ability to adapt and persist. She has navigated the pressures of the global circuit, including turning down offers to change her citizenship for financial gain early in her career. Her commitment to her identity is further reflected in her active efforts to master the Ukrainian language, a promise she made in 2022. Even after taking a break to start a family in 2022, she returned to competition in 2023 with immediate success, proving that her competitive drive remains as potent as it was when she first stepped onto the court as a child.
