From Olenegorsk to the world stage: the rise of tennis powerhouse Liudmila Samsonova
In short: Born in the Russian industrial city of Olenegorsk, Liudmila Samsonova moved to Italy as a toddler, where she eventually launched a professional tennis career. Known for her aggressive, hard-hitting style, she navigated a complex path between national identities before emerging as a top-tier competitor and a Billie Jean King Cup champion.
Liudmila Samsonova’s journey in professional tennis is marked by a unique international trajectory. Born in 1998, she relocated to Italy at age one after her father, a table tennis player, was recruited by a club in Turin. Although she began playing tennis at six, her early career was defined by a period representing Italy from 2014 to 2018. She later transitioned to competing under the Russian flag, a decision she attributed to the intense pressure of the Italian national team environment and a desire to compete more independently.
Her professional ascent was gradual, beginning with her first ITF title in Rome in 2014. After years of fluctuating rankings and hard work on the ITF Circuit, she achieved a major breakthrough in 2021. That year, she secured her maiden WTA Tour title at the German Open in Berlin, defeating world No. 12 Belinda Bencic in the final. This victory propelled her into the top 100, and she soon followed it with a strong performance at Wimbledon, reaching the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time.
Beyond individual success, Samsonova became a pivotal figure in team competition. During the 2020–21 Billie Jean King Cup, she remained undefeated across five matches, leading the Russian team to their first title since 2008. Her game, characterized by what she calls a "boom boom" hard-hitting style, has made her a formidable opponent on the WTA Tour. Despite facing challenges with passport processes and varying levels of federation support, she has climbed as high as world No. 12 in singles, consistently proving herself as a force in modern tennis.
