Elisha: The Wonder-Working Prophet Who Inherited a Double Portion of Power
In short: An Israelite prophet and wonder-worker, Elisha served as a pivotal advisor to kings and a successor to Elijah. From multiplying oil to resuscitating the dead, his narrative is defined by extraordinary miracles. Yet, his legacy extends far beyond the Hebrew Bible, shaping traditions across Christianity, Islam, and the Bahá'í Faith.
Elisha, the son of a wealthy landowner named Shaphat, emerged as the protégé of the prophet Elijah. According to the biblical narrative, when Elijah was taken into heaven by a whirlwind, Elisha requested a double portion of his master's spirit. This request is often interpreted as a claim to the status of a rightful heir, mirroring inheritance customs where the eldest son received twice the share of his siblings. However, some scholars argue the term signifies a desire for even greater prophetic authority, noting that Elisha is recorded as performing twice as many miracles as his predecessor.
Active from 892 to 832 BCE, Elisha served as a counselor to the kings of Israel, frequently correcting leaders who acted against the Hebrew God. His miracles were diverse and profound: he purified unwholesome waters, multiplied food for the hungry, and cured the Syrian commander Naaman of leprosy. His reputation for power was so immense that even after his death, a body placed in his tomb was said to have revived upon touching his remains. These stories offer unique, if debated, insights into the folk religion of the ancient Kingdom of Israel.
Elisha’s influence persists across centuries and cultures. In Islam, he is venerated as a prophet and successor to Elijah, mentioned in the Quran as one of the excellent. Christian traditions, particularly the Carmelite order, claim a spiritual descent from him, and his relics have been the subject of historical veneration and conflict. From the Byzantine era to modern-day Egypt, where his remains are claimed to reside in the Monastery of Saint Macarius the Great, Elisha remains a figure of enduring religious significance.
