Beneath the Solomon Islands, a hidden world of glowing marine life awaits discovery.

Explore21: Expedition to the Solomon Islands—The Expedition Begins · 3:05 · Video: American Museum of Natural History · Watch at the source

In short: American Museum of Natural History researchers explore the Solomon Islands to study biofluorescence. This expedition captures underwater creatures emitting light in colors typically invisible to human vision, revealing how marine life transforms light in the deep ocean.

The Explore21 initiative combines traditional fieldwork with modern technology to investigate the natural world. During this expedition, scientists examined how various fish and coral species absorb light and re-emit it as different colors. This phenomenon, known as biofluorescence, is a widespread and variable trait among marine organisms.

The project received funding from National Geographic Waitt Grants W214-12 and W101-10. The initiative itself was made possible through the support of the Dalio Foundation, alongside leadership contributions from several private donors, including the Kempner and Macaulay families.
