Do deep-sea fish glow in the dark of the Arctic?

In short: In the freezing, iceberg-laden waters of Greenland, researchers are hunting for a hidden light. While biofluorescence is common in tropical reefs, scientists are now investigating how extreme seasonal darkness affects the ability of local fish to transform blue light into vibrant greens, reds, and yellows.

The search for biofluorescence in the Arctic is part of a broader effort to understand life in extreme environments. While the ability to convert blue light into other visible wavelengths is well-documented in sun-drenched tropical regions, the impact of Greenland's intense periods of darkness remains a mystery. Recent expeditions, such as the Constantine S. Niarchos Expedition led by Museum Curator John Sparks and Research Associate David Gruber, have focused on observing these phenomena firsthand in remote, icy waters.

Beyond the study of light, massive multidisciplinary efforts like the CASCADES expedition are mapping the complex interactions between melting glaciers and the sea. Sailing over 3,000 nautical miles to reach locations like the Robeson Channel at 82°N, researchers are investigating how meltwater alters the surrounding ocean. This work involves a diverse team of glaciologists, microbiologists, and biogeochemists studying how nutrients and carbon move from the surface to the deep sea.

The scientific stakes are high. By using tools like the CTD rosette to measure salinity and temperature, and collecting six-meter-long sediment cores to reconstruct fjord history, scientists are piecing together the impact of global warming. Specialized ocean-color remote-sensing work, supported by the Canadian Space Agency, also aims to validate data from NASA’s PACE satellite. By measuring how light travels through the water column, researchers can identify phytoplankton communities that form the essential base of these fragile marine ecosystems.
