Is artificial intelligence an all-powerful overlord or a new environment for human thought?

Forging Better Futures for You and AI - Matt Jones · 50:19 · Video: Gresham College · Watch at the source

In short: We often fear AI as a looming master, but this dramatic narrative may be a spell that blinds us to its true nature. Instead of a rival, AI is becoming an environment that shapes our thinking. Like music, it holds the power to reorganize our attention, memory, and feeling.

Professor Matt Jones, a computer scientist at Swansea University, argues that the prevailing public narrative of AI as an 'Overlord'—a force that might replace human labor or diminish our autonomy—is a distraction. While these fears are serious, they obscure the quieter, more significant ways AI is already altering our lives. Jones suggests that we should stop asking whether AI will become conscious or more powerful than us, and instead focus on how we can build relationships with it that help us live more fully.

To understand this, Jones distinguishes between three types of power. Agentive power, often seen in fire or animals, involves an entity acting with its own momentum that we must manage. Material power, however, is found in instruments like a sculptor’s marble, a surgeon’s scalpel, or a violin. These objects do not act on their own; they push back, demand practice, and extend our judgment. Jones proposes that AI should be viewed as an instrument we learn to play, rather than a vending machine that simply produces finished answers.

The danger lies in how these instruments can invert their relationship with us. Using the analogy of a walking stick, Jones explains that while support is helpful, it can lead to dependence if it removes the effort required to rebuild capacity. If AI provides too much support, our own thinking may reorganize around it, effectively redefining our intentions. Ultimately, the question is not just how AI should behave, but what kind of thinking its presence makes possible in us, ensuring it remains a tool that leaves us more capable than before.

Jones’s perspective is informed by over 30 years of human-centered research, including sustained engagement with low-resource communities in India, South Africa, and Kenya. His work, supported by UKRI and EPSRC, emphasizes inclusive digital technologies. By moving away from the 'Overlord' spell, we can begin to treat AI as an environment that shapes the conditions in which our thoughts and feelings occur, much like music reorganizes the atmosphere of a room.
