Why AI Tutors Must Stop Giving Answers to Truly Help Students Learn
In short: To improve academic outcomes, Khan Academy rebuilt its AI platform from the ground up. By integrating tutoring directly into practice sessions rather than keeping it as a separate tool, the system now prevents students from cementing bad habits, acting as a personal guide that encourages productive struggle instead of shortcuts.
In January 2025, Khan Academy made the strategic decision to overhaul its AI-integrated platform, Khanmigo, following a year of pilot testing. The organization recognized that its initial 2023 launch had a significant flaw: students often viewed the AI as a separate application. When faced with a difficult problem, students would rather guess or stall than navigate away from their work to open a chat window. By the 2025–26 school year, the team had reimagined the experience, embedding AI directly into the flow of practice to ensure support appears exactly when a student encounters a hurdle.
The core philosophy behind this redesign is the management of productive struggle. Initially, the platform strictly prohibited the AI from providing answers to prevent students from bypassing the learning process. However, feedback from pilot districts—including Hanover Community School Corporation in Indiana and Taft ISD in Texas—revealed that this approach required more nuance. If a student is about to submit an incorrect answer, the AI now offers gentle hints to encourage an attempt. If a mistake has already occurred, the AI steps in to walk the student through the logic, preventing the repetition of errors that are notoriously difficult to unteach later.
For district leaders like Assistant Superintendent Phil Misecko, this shift is essential for managing limited resources and budgetary pressures. By acting as a personal tutor that monitors progress in real-time, the platform helps teachers identify which students need immediate intervention. This design moves beyond simply adding another tool to the classroom; it creates a cohesive routine where data is actionable and student agency is prioritized. As Academic Dean Dr. Juan Vila noted, the goal is to make the AI an unobtrusive support system that leaves students feeling in control of their own academic journey.
