Before the neon lights, Las Vegas was a Mojave sanctuary

From Desert to Party Central: The Birth of Las Vegas · 7:32 · Video: Today I Found Out · Watch at the source

In short: Explore the ancient origins of one of the world's most famous entertainment hubs. This video traces the land's history from its indigenous roots to the first recorded foreign encounters in the 18th century.

Long before it became a global destination for nightlife and gambling, the region surrounding modern-day Las Vegas was inhabited by Mojave tribes for thousands of years. The area served as a significant cultural landscape for these indigenous people.

Evidence from history shows that initial contact between external groups and these tribes took place during the 1770s. The region's first non-native visitor was Spanish missionary Francisco Gracias, who recorded in his diaries that early meetings with locals were very cordial.
