How a grieving physician transformed Tibetan Buddhism by merging two distinct spiritual lineages
In short: Gampopa Sönam Rinchen was a trained doctor who renounced his life after losing his family. By integrating the structured, gradual teachings of the Kadampa school with the intense, experiential Mahamudra practices of the yogi Milarepa, he created the foundation for the enduring Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism.
Born in 1079 in the Nyal district of Central Tibet, Gampopa was a polymath trained in Indian, Chinese, and Tibetan medicine. His life shifted dramatically following the death of his wife and child, prompting him to take monastic vows at age twenty-five in 1104. He initially immersed himself in the Kadampa lineage, known for its systematic approach to spiritual development, before seeking out the legendary yogi Milarepa to master the esoteric practices of Mahamudra.
Gampopa’s unique contribution was the synthesis of these two worlds. He combined the Lamrim—a structured, gradual path to enlightenment—with the direct, experiential methods of the Kagyu lineage. This integration is best captured in his "Four Dharmas," a framework where dharma turns into the path, the path dispels confusion, and confusion ultimately dawns as wisdom. In 1121, he founded the Daklha Gampo Monastery, which became the epicenter for his teachings and the birthplace of the Dagpo Kagyu school.
His influence radiated through his students, leading to the "Four Major and Eight Minor" lineages that define the Kagyu tradition today. Notable schools like the Karma Kagyu, founded by the first Karmapa, Düsum Khyenpa, trace their roots back to his teachings. Gampopa also authored "The Jewel Ornament of Liberation," a foundational text that remains a cornerstone of Tibetan Buddhist study. Despite the loss of the original edition of his collected works, his legacy persists through later editions and translations, cementing his role as a pivotal architect of Tibetan spiritual practice until his death in 1153.
