In short: Born in 807, Dongshan Liangjie founded the influential Caodong school of Chan Buddhism. By emphasizing silent illumination and the Five Ranks, he moved away from competitive attainment toward a self-fulfilling practice. His teachings, transmitted to Japan as Sōtō Zen, continue to shape Buddhist thought centuries after his death.

Dongshan Liangjie was born in Kuaiji during the Tang dynasty. Showing early promise, he began his monastic training at age ten on Mount Wutai and later took full precepts at the Shaolin Monastery. His spiritual development was heavily influenced by Master Yunyan Tansheng, from whom he inherited key teachings on the Three Types of Leakage and the precious mirror samādhi. In 859, after years of wandering and serving as an instructor, he established his own school on Mount Dongshan in Jiangxi province.

The Caodong school, named for Dongshan and his student Caoshan Benji, became one of the Five Houses of Zen. Dongshan was particularly noted for his Five Ranks, a doctrine mapping the relationship between absolute and relative realities through metaphorical verses. Unlike some contemporaries who focused on specific goals, his lineage eventually championed 'silent illumination'—a practice that rejects the dualistic distinction between ignorance and enlightenment, encouraging students to walk in emptiness rather than seek truth in another person's mouth.

Despite his lasting legacy, historical records of Dongshan are sparse, limited mostly to encounter dialogues and basic biographical data. He died in 869 at age sixty-three, famously instructing his students to avoid making a commotion over his passing. While his direct lineage through Caoshan was short-lived, the branch established by his student Yunju Daoying persisted in China until the seventeenth century. His teachings eventually reached Japan in the thirteenth century through Dōgen, who founded the Sōtō school, ensuring Dongshan’s influence endured far beyond the Tang era.
