Why Nazi Germany’s desperate naval special forces failed to change the war's outcome
In short: As Allied technology turned the tide against U-boats in 1943, the German Navy pivoted to bizarre, small-scale weaponry. This video examines the creation and underwhelming performance of these desperate naval special forces, from human torpedoes to explosive motorboats.
By 1943, advancements in radar, sonar, and long-range aircraft had neutralized the threat of German U-boats, which had previously dominated the North Atlantic. With the surface fleet largely confined to port and the Allies advancing through Italy and France, the Kriegsmarine faced strategic irrelevance.
In a final attempt to regain an advantage, the German Navy deployed unconventional miniature craft, including midget submarines, frogmen, and remote-controlled explosive boats. Despite their creative design, these weapons were ultimately ineffective and failed to influence the war's trajectory.
