How wearable technology is changing the way we document remote paleontological expeditions

Google Glass in the Gobi: Road Trip · 5:51 · Video: American Museum of Natural History · Watch at the source

In short: Join a team of paleontologists in the Gobi Desert as they use Google Glass to capture their field research. This video series offers a unique, firsthand perspective on the daily life and scientific discovery process of an American Museum of Natural History expedition.

Since 1990, the American Museum of Natural History has returned to the Gobi Desert every summer to hunt for fossils, building upon a legacy of exploration that dates back to the 1920s. In 1993, researchers discovered Ukhaa Tolgod, a site that yielded an extraordinary collection of Cretaceous-era dinosaur, lizard, and mammal fossils.

The featured expedition was led by Mike Novacek and Mark Norell. Student Aki Watanabe, from the Richard Gilder Graduate School, utilized Google Glass to document the journey. This technology provides an immersive look at the team's work, ranging from prospecting for specimens to navigating the desert landscape.
