What does a paleontologist pack for a three-week desert expedition?
In short: Join Aki Watanabe, a doctoral student at the American Museum of Natural History, as he prepares for a fossil-hunting journey to the Gobi Desert.
The video follows Watanabe's preparations for a twenty-one-day trip to Mongolia. He travels alongside Mark Norell, the chair of the Museum's Division of Paleontology, to visit Ukhaa Tolgod. This site, discovered in 1993 by Museum researchers and Mongolian scientists, is a remarkably productive fossil bed. Since that discovery, annual excavations have unearthed various remains from the Cretaceous period, including fossils of mammals, lizards, and dinosaurs.
