The incredible story of the Olympian who competed with a wooden leg
In short: Discover the remarkable feat of George Eyser, an American gymnast who won six medals at the 1904 Summer Olympics despite competing with an artificial limb.
At the 1904 Summer Olympics, gymnast George Eyser achieved a historic performance, securing three gold medals in the long horse vault, parallel bars, and a 25 ft. rope climb, alongside two silver medals in the pommel horse and 4-event all-around, and one bronze in the horizontal bar. Eyser's achievement is particularly extraordinary because he competed with a wooden leg, the result of a train accident during his youth that cost him most of his left leg. Until South African swimmer Natalie du Toit participated in Beijing 2008, no other Olympian had competed using a prosthetic limb.
