How one photograph helped save a critically endangered species from industrial destruction

Handled with Care: Protecting The Jamaican Iguana | Wildlife Photographer of the Year · 3:23 · Video: Natural History Museum · Watch at the source

In short: This video explores how Robin Moore’s award-winning photography became a catalyst for environmental activism. By documenting the plight of the Jamaican iguana, Moore and his collaborators successfully pressured the government to cancel a major infrastructure project that threatened the species' only habitat.

In 2013, the Jamaican government proposed a transshipment hub within the island’s largest nature reserve, a move that would have likely pushed the critically endangered Jamaican iguana toward extinction. Wildlife photographer Robin Moore spent two-and-a-half years working with local communities and the Jamaican Environment Trust to challenge these plans.

The campaign culminated in 2016, when the government officially abandoned the port project. Moore’s image, titled Handled With Care, was later recognized in the 53rd Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition. This story illustrates the mission of the Natural History Museum’s annual contest: using the emotive power of photography to transform public perception and advocate for the protection of the natural world.
