Why Pope Francis believes the climate crisis is a profound moral imperative

His Holiness Pope Francis | Our moral imperative to act on climate change [English] · 13:03 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: The global climate crisis demands a total transformation of how we live. Speaking from Vatican City, Pope Francis argues that we face a fundamental choice between what matters and what does not, urging humanity to act in community to protect the Earth and promote human dignity.

In 2015, Pope Francis published the encyclical Laudato Si', or "Praise be to You," which introduced the concept of "integral ecology." In this work, he addressed the need for "caring for our common home" and warned that the post-industrial era might be remembered as one of history's most irresponsible periods. He expressed hope, however, that the dawn of the 21st century might instead be remembered for humanity generously shouldering its grave responsibilities. This influential document received worldwide attention. He specifically focused on the necessity of protecting our shared environment.

The 2015 Paris Agreement highlighted this pressing need, as 195 nations pledged to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius and stay far beneath 2 degrees to prevent severe climate shifts. Despite this historic commitment, recent years have seen fires, floods, droughts, and hurricanes dominate global news, signaling a widening gap between international targets and environmental reality.

During the October 10, 2020, livestream of TED's Countdown initiative, the Pope emphasized that the future is built today, and it must be built through community and harmony rather than isolation. His advocacy highlights a tension between conclusive scientific data confirming human-driven climate change and the world's failure to stay on track with established targets. His recent work, including the encyclical Fratelli Tutti, continues this call for social and environmental responsibility. This address was part of the closing session for the Countdown Global Launch. His message underscores the urgent necessity for genuine progress.
