Why the ability to see is the foundation of the ability to create

How computers are learning to be creative | Blaise Agüera y Arcas · 17:35 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: Google scientist Blaise Agüera y Arcas demonstrates how deep neural networks can be flipped from recognition tools into engines of artistic creation. It challenges our definition of creativity by suggesting that the mechanics of perception and the mechanics of art are fundamentally linked.

By running neural networks trained for image recognition in reverse, Agüera y Arcas produces hallucinatory collages and poems that defy standard categorization. This process highlights a core thesis: any being capable of performing perceptual acts is also capable of creation.

The work is supported by AMI, a Google program that bridges the gap between engineers and artists. By integrating machine intelligence into existing artistic practices and gallery exhibitions, the project aims to provoke a public conversation on new ways of conceptualizing intelligent systems.
