Your immune system is a biological marvel that rivals the complexity of your brain.

How Does Our Immune System Protect Us? - Robin May · 40:21 · Video: Gresham College · Watch at the source

In short: Every breath you take exposes you to countless microbes, yet you remain protected by a sophisticated internal defense network. Billions of specialized cells circulate through your body, monitoring for threats and mobilizing with incredible precision. Discover how this extraordinary machine identifies invaders, triggers inflammation, and retains a permanent memory.

The human immune system operates with a level of complexity comparable to the brain. Within the bloodstream, an estimated 10 billion white blood cells circulate, constantly poised to neutralize infectious threats. Beyond these, millions more immune cells reside within organs, surveying surrounding tissues for signs of foreign invaders. This system is essential for survival; without it, even minor injuries like a thorn scratch could become life-threatening.

When a threat is detected, the body initiates a rapid, coordinated response. Phagocytic cells, including neutrophils and macrophages, track down pathogens by following a scent trail of microbial molecules. Once these cells locate an invader, they release signaling molecules that alter blood flow, temperature, and cellular physiology. This process creates the systemic response we recognize as inflammation, which serves to contain the threat while alerting other parts of the immune system.

The final stage of this defense involves the adaptive immune system, specifically B-cells and T-cells. These cells execute a highly precise attack tailored to the specific pathogen. Crucially, this stage ensures the immune system develops a lasting memory of the encounter. This adaptation allows the body to respond with significantly greater speed and efficiency if the same pathogen is encountered again in the future. This lecture, delivered by Professor Robin May on 27 November 2024 at Barnard's Inn Hall, London, examines these mechanisms and how they maintain our health.

While the system is remarkably accurate, rarely triggering false alarms, it is not infallible. Understanding how these cells function—and what happens when they malfunction—is vital for maintaining immune health. Factors such as diet play a significant role, as short-term dietary changes can lead to immune depression. By studying these processes, we gain insight into how to keep our internal defenses in optimal condition.
