Can we use light to sail across the vastness of interstellar space?

How humanity can reach the stars | Philip Lubin · 8:32 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: Reaching the nearest stars has long been considered impossible with current rocket technology. However, a new frontier in propulsion suggests that directed energy could propel tiny probes to relativistic speeds, potentially allowing humanity to exit our solar system and explore the cosmos.

The challenge of interstellar travel lies in the staggering distances between stars. To reach Proxima Centauri, our closest stellar neighbor, conventional chemical rockets would take far too long. Astrophysicist Philip Lubin, a professor at UC Santa Barbara, proposes a different mechanism: photonics-based propulsion. By using directed energy, or lasers, we could potentially accelerate small spacecraft to relativistic speeds, making the first interstellar missions a physical possibility.

This concept relies on the power of light itself. Rather than carrying heavy fuel, these small probes would be pushed by intense beams of light. This technology is part of a broader research field into directed energy systems, which includes both small-scale single launcher solutions and much larger standoff systems. While the primary goal is deep-space exploration, the same principles of directed energy are being studied for planetary defense, specifically for detecting and mitigating threats from comets and asteroids.

The science behind this vision is rooted in decades of high-precision cosmology. Philip Lubin’s research group has been at the forefront of mapping the early universe, having detected horizon-scale fluctuations in the Cosmic Microwave Background using both balloon-borne and South Pole systems twenty years ago. His work as a co-investigator on the Planck mission helped map the structures of the early universe in exquisite detail. This deep understanding of the universe's fundamental parameters provides the scientific foundation for the ambitious engineering required to one day navigate it.
