The man who has freed over 6,000 wrongfully convicted people

How I help free innocent people from prison | Ronald Sullivan · 11:55 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: Legal theorist Ronald Sullivan does more than teach at Harvard. Known as the 'Muhammad Ali of wrongful convictions,' he has dedicated his career to dismantling mass incarceration by securing the release of thousands of innocent individuals through groundbreaking legal strategies and conviction integrity programs.

Ronald Sullivan, a professor at Harvard Law School, has built a career at the intersection of legal theory and high-stakes practice. Specialising in race theory, procedure, and criminal law, he frequently accepts trials viewed as 'impossible' by lawyers. His history features a New York $1.4 billion securities fraud victory with five not guilty verdicts, alongside an acquittal for ex-New England Patriot Aaron Hernandez in a double murder trial. His courtroom record also includes securing an acquittal in a massive federal indictment involving six counts of Residential Mortgage Backed Securities Fraud. Furthermore, he obtained a Ferguson settlement for Michael Brown's relatives regarding a wrongful death suit, despite the U.S. Department of Justice's refusal to pursue charges.

Beyond individual defense, Sullivan has pioneered systemic institutional change. In 2014, he was tasked by the late Brooklyn District Attorney Ken Thompson to design and implement the Conviction Review Unit (CRU). This unit, intended to identify and exonerate the wrongly convicted, became a national model for conviction integrity programs. Since then, Sullivan has advised prosecutor's offices across the United States on implementing similar meaningful integrity frameworks. Sullivan's expertise is deeply rooted in his academic leadership, having served as the Faculty Director, Emeritus, of the Harvard Criminal Justice Institute. He also directs the Harvard Trial Advocacy Workshop.

His influence extends into the highest levels of American policy. In 2008, he chaired the Criminal Justice Advisory Committee for Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, providing research-based policy recommendations. He also served as an advisor to the Department of Justice Presidential Transition Team. While his academic roles include directing the Harvard Trial Advocacy Workshop, his primary focus remains serving underserved communities and fighting the consequences of wrongful imprisonment. His background in politics is also notable, having joined the Obama campaign's National Legal Advisory Group. Furthermore, between 2009 and 2019, he held the distinction of being the first African American to serve as Faculty Dean of Winthrop House at Harvard College.
