How To Develop Your Own Pinhole Camera Photographs · 3:48 · Video: The Royal Institution · Watch at the source

In short: Discover how to transform everyday items like mint, coffee, or basil into a photographic developer. This video demonstrates how to create a pinhole camera and a functional developing solution to produce your own negative images.

The process relies on using substances containing caffeic acid, such as dried mint, coffee, or basil, to convert colorless silver ions in photographic paper into dark silver. To prepare a mint-based developer, steep 10g of dried mint leaves in 200ml of hot water for 15 minutes. This mixture is then combined with a solution of 200ml of cold water and two 1000mg vitamin C tablets. Adding 10g of bicarbonate of soda helps dissolve the vitamin C by creating the necessary alkaline conditions. Finally, an acidic stop solution made from 5ml of lemon juice mixed with 200ml of water is used to halt the chemical reaction.
