The Milky Way was once an ablaze nursery of young stars

How Were The Stars Formed? - Joseph Silk · 55:02 · Video: Gresham College · Watch at the source

In short: Explore the violent, gravity-driven birth of stars and planets. This lecture by Joseph Silk explains how interstellar gas and dust transformed into the celestial structures we see today.

Stars originate in massive clouds of interstellar gas orbiting within galaxies. As these clouds accumulate mass, they become gravitationally unstable, causing them to collapse. As these structures implode, the interior areas break apart into thick, chilly gas clusters which later spark to create stellar bodies.

The process also accounts for our own solar system. Dust particles within these nebulae coalesce into disk-like structures with rocky cores, eventually agglomerating into planets. This means our entire planetary neighborhood was constructed from 'interstellar grit.' Joseph Silk, a leading expert on the early Universe and former Gresham Professor of Astronomy, provides the scientific context for these cosmic cycles.
