Your emotions can physically reshape the anatomy of your heart

Sandeep Jauhar: How your emotions change the shape of your heart · 16:36 · Video: TED · Watch at the source

In short: We often speak of heartbreak as a metaphor, but for some, it is a literal medical emergency. Intense grief or fear can cause the heart to physically change shape and lose significant function, creating a visible record of our internal emotional lives on our most vital organ.

Cardiologist Sandeep Jauhar describes a phenomenon where profound emotions, such as the death of a spouse or the end of a romantic relationship, can cause the heart to acutely weaken. In one specific case, a woman experiencing intense grief after her husband's death presented with symptoms of congestive heart failure, including chest pain, shortness of breath, and water in her lungs. However, an angiogram revealed her coronary arteries were completely clear, with no blockages present.

The patient was instead diagnosed with takotsubo cardiomyopathy, commonly known as "broken heart syndrome." The name derives from a Japanese pot used to trap octopuses, which features a wide base and a narrow neck. On an ultrasound, the patient's heart mirrored this shape: the base was constricted while the apex had ballooned out. In this state, the heart's function had weakened to less than half of its normal capacity.

The significance of this condition lies in the direct link between emotional distress and physical pathology. While many view the heart's role in emotion as purely symbolic, takotsubo cardiomyopathy proves that emotions can have a disruptive, tangible effect on cardiac structure. Interestingly, the condition is often reversible; as the patient's emotional state returned to its baseline and the grief subsided, follow-up ultrasounds showed her heart had returned to its normal shape.

Jauhar argues for a shift in how we approach cardiac health, suggesting that the record of our emotional lives is written on our hearts. By recognizing that stress, fear, and sadness can literally break the heart, we can better understand the necessity of nurturing our emotional well-being as a fundamental component of physical health.
