In short: Igor and Grichka Bogdanoff were French television icons who pivoted to cosmology, eventually earning Ph.D.s in mathematics and physics. Yet, their academic work triggered a global scandal, with experts dismissing their papers as nonsensical jargon. The brothers remained defiant, even as they became cult figures in the world of cryptocurrency.

The Bogdanoff brothers rose to fame in 1979 with their science-fiction program Temps X, which introduced French audiences to series like Doctor Who. Decades later, they pursued advanced degrees at the University of Burgundy. Grichka earned a doctorate in mathematics in 1999, followed by Igor in theoretical physics in 2002. Both received the lowest possible passing grade, yet their publications in peer-reviewed journals sparked an immediate firestorm within the scientific community.

The controversy erupted in 2002 when physicists began circulating emails suggesting the twins' work was a sophisticated hoax. Experts, including Fields Medalist Alain Connes, described the papers as incoherent collections of buzzwords devoid of actual scientific content. A subsequent investigation by the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) concluded that the theses lacked any genuine value, famously noting that the work was merely empty content dressed in complex terminology. Despite this, the brothers fiercely defended their academic legitimacy, often resorting to legal action against critics.

Beyond their academic pursuits, the twins became known for their evolving physical appearance and their penchant for grandiose, often unsubstantiated, claims about their noble ancestry and childhood IQ scores. In their later years, they found an unlikely second life as internet memes, with cryptocurrency enthusiasts portraying them as all-powerful market manipulators. The brothers embraced this digital fame, claiming they had predicted the rise of crypto decades earlier on their television show. They died in January 2022, days apart, following complications from COVID-19.
