Exploring the vast artistic traditions of the Pacific and Island Southeast Asia

Inside the Gallery—Views of New Galleries for Oceanic Art · 9:11 · Video: The Met · Watch at the source

In short: This video introduces the Metropolitan Museum of Art's redesigned galleries for Oceanic art. It showcases a significantly larger selection of the Museum's Pacific holdings, including masterworks and recent acquisitions from across the region.

The new permanent installation features sculpture and decorative arts from Polynesia, Melanesia, Micronesia, and Australia. Additionally, this represents the Museum's inaugural permanent space for indigenous Southeast Asian island art. These displays represent a small window into a Pacific region that covers roughly one-third of the earth's surface and contains hundreds of artistic traditions and over a thousand distinct cultures.
