Can data points reveal the hidden personality of a nation?
In short: Artist R. Luke DuBois transforms abstract information into intimate human portraits. This talk explores how technology reflects our culture and the risks of reducing complex human identities to mere statistics.
DuBois presents nine distinct projects that bridge the gap between data and personality. These range from mapping the United States based on the most unique words found in 19 million dating-site profiles to a conceptual gun that fires a blank for every reported shooting in New Orleans.
The work serves as a critique of our digital age. DuBois argues that while we often simplify others into data points, the way we utilize technology actually provides a mirror for our own cultural values and behaviors.
